What is the Global University Phone System?

The Global University Phone System is a network that connects your traditional university phone lines with new emerging voice over IP (VOIP) technologies that allow calls to be placed over the internet free of charge. REEF will be providing eligible universities with the proper software and hardware needed to easily install and connect their phone networks with other academic institutions around the globe. Calls then travel over the internet using VOIP, which bypasses traditional telecommunication charges for phone calls and connects to the rapidly expanding VOIP community.
All calls that go through the global network adhere to the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) approved SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard. The SIP protocol is an open standard, so calls can be made not just between participating campuses, but also between any PC user that supports SIP. Universities are then able to offer this phone service to the campus community through affiliate programs, such as Gizmo Project, or to deploy SIP based digital phone devices such as wifi phones, all of which can make free calls to campus numbers.
